9/28/2023 0 Comments Discipline equals freedom vinylMaybe we were in the middle of a relationship and felt like we were suffocating or maybe we felt like we had no idea who we were anymore. We may have had times in our lives when everything seemed to be going wrong or times when everything went right for us but somehow felt hollow. Regardless of how you define self-discipline, there’s no doubt that we all know what it feels like when we lack it. Then there are the people who equate discipline with punishment if something feels good, then discipline must mean depriving yourself of such pleasures, for example, denying yourself all your favorite foods). Some will say that self-discipline means following every impulse and temptation while others say it means pushing themselves past their limits and making themselves do things they don’t want to do. Self-Discipline is a term that can mean many things to many different people. So if having self-discipline still seems like something that’s up your alley, take a few moments to think about what might be one of the most difficult things for you to achieve in your own life. The more you put into your life, the more you’ll get out of it in return. This also means that the benefits of having self-discipline are never-ending. For example, suppose someone who has never attempted quitting smoking before finds it surprisingly easy once she decides to quit drinking alcohol as well. Once you’ve begun developing self-discipline into your lifestyle, don’t be surprised when it starts spilling over into other areas of your life as well. So as much as you might want to wake up one day ready and able to exercise self-control at all times-and even be able to pass that ability on to others-this goal is much more realistic if you take it in small steps. In other words, building up self-discipline is like adding another skill under your belt-it takes time and lots of practice before you’ll become comfortable with this new part of yourself. When you think about it, just because something is difficult to maintain doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to do-even if only for a short while.įor example, a writer may have to spend years and years perfecting their craft, but once they become well-versed in their skillset, writing becomes second nature to them. It’s also true that those who lack self-discipline may feel as though they can’t rely on themselves when temptation rears its head because chances are they’ve never seen their resolve put to the test before-or if they have, they haven’t been to hold fast and resist acting on their impulses. You don’t wake up one morning with no discipline and then find yourself overflowing with it either. Like a muscle, self-discipline can be tiring and overworked, but contrary to popular belief it doesn’t have an on/off switch that you can flip depending on whether or not you want to exert discipline at any given time. First, let’s clear up a few of the misconceptions about self-discipline.
